Control of an Energy Circulation Type Saw Motor Considering Dead-zone

For a viewpoint of controllability, characterization and control method of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) motor were studied. The speed of the SAW motor has strong non-linearity in relation to the driving voltage i.e. the dead zone. Then, influence on drive performance by dead zone of SAW motors was examined. The experimental results show the threshold of the dead zone didn’t change while the motor driving. This motor in non-linear system was approximated to a linear model by introducing an inverse function which adds driving voltage offset to cancel the dead zone. By the inverse function, it makes possible that a PID controller controls the SAW motor. Experimental results showed that the SAW motor was smoothly moved and successfully controlled.
